Why Shame the Motherfucker?

Watching a conversation about ADHD left me wondering how much we miss when the aim becomes getting someone to be a bit more normal.

A caricature of Dr Daniel Amen holds a short wooden ruler labelled NORMAL beside a flowering tree growing from a blue office chair.

I watched a psychiatrist talking to Stephen Bartlett about his ADHD, and it felt like he was shaming him.

It felt like a status game. Like he was trying to one-up Bartlett.

That was my biased perception. It doesn’t necessarily mean that was what was happening.

What pisses me off is the shame around it.

If the motherfucker can hyperfocus on something he actually cares about, why make him feel broken because it isn’t the thing society wants him to focus on?

We call it attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. That’s one framing of it. One lens.

Maybe, for some people, another part of the picture is that they’re bored as hell by normal routine. By what a normal life is supposed to look like. They need more stimulation.

I don’t see anything wrong with needing something more stimulating than that.

Maybe there’s too much life in the human to fit neatly into that routine. They want to express themselves.

There’s something fascinating about a person getting that absorbed in something they care about. There’s potential there. Hyperfocus can be useful at times.

I’m assuming a lot of the things we all enjoy were made by crazy neurodivergent motherfuckers. That’s my assumption. I don’t have the scientific evidence for it.

But I wonder how much we miss when the conversation becomes about getting someone to be a bit more normal.

It starts to feel like we’re making him feel broken because his attention isn’t going where we want it to go.

Why shame the motherfucker?

That’s just my biased, unbalanced perspective. 🤣🤣🤣
